The Wall & Methotrexate

Training was going well. Lifted Monday morning, felt great. Hands hurt throughout Monday at work but what else is new? Took my methotrexate monday morning after the gym session. Then at about 11 a.m. yesterday, BOOM the stomach aches come in a flurry. Then a couple hours later, I'm suddenly super tired, and my hands are hurting even more.

Luckily, I had another anti-inflammatory dinner waiting for me when I got home, a stir-fry dish, and it was excellent. Had a mixed berry dessert as well. Felt exhausted still.

Woke up this morning to go for a run, but noticed very quickly that a significant portion of my body was hurting and telling me "this run isn't going to happen." Every step was painful/tiring and felt like I had run a marathon in my sleep. Went to put on my compression shorts, and low and behold my back hurt to the point where I couldn't even put them on. Sat down, put the compression shorts on, got up and it seemed more leg muscles hurt. Thought for a minute or two about "toughing it out" and realized that attitude doesn't work anymore (kind of a sobering realization).

Sucks to think, I was on my training for a solid month straight, feeling great, had run 5 miles on Sunday, a good lifting session on Monday morning, then two hours after taking the methotrexate the slide starts and 24 hours later my body is aching more than it had the past month combined.

Luckily, I think, the RA Community on Twitter is really awesome. I knew that just by tweeting out a question, I'd have an inbox full of answer or replies, and I did. So thank you everyone. The link between muscle soreness/fatigue and RA is very interesting to me, because it's different then the painful feelings I feel in my hands/wrists/arms.

Going to attempt to get back on the schedule tomorrow, but have a feeling it may just be a long stretching section and seeing when my gym offers yoga classes.

  1. Congrats on your running! I just finished the NYC marathon after months of training with RA, fundraising for the Arthritis Foundation. It was brutal - I suffered from major blistering and ended up walking a lot of it - but I finished! Check out my blog, NYC Sick Chick Blog, to read some of my posts about my training: http://nycsickchickclub.blogspot.com/

  2. Hi RA Runner,

Great blog, already marked as favorite. It would be great if someday you write about your diagnosis story...I'm really interested on it, if it was a straightforward thing or you struggled with miss-diagnosis..

Keep being active, is a key thing in order to handle the diseasse properly.
